Google Executive Chairman, Eric Schmidt, who talked at the Silicon Valley tech meeting, discussed the threat of governmental mass surveillance.
He said: “The simplest outcome: We’re going to end up breaking the Internet, because what’s going to happen is governments will do bad laws of one kind or another, and eventually what’s going to happen is: ‘We’re going to have our own Internet in our own country, and we’re going to do it our way.’”
Mass surveillance in America is a serious reason to shut down the Internet. In order to rule the nation, the state expands its control and provides less freedom. The government of Russia imposed limits for American providers so that they keep their data centers for Russians within the country. Meantime, China is known for its totalitarian control of the Internet.
The Internet control of national governments does not comply with the concept of The Internet itself. This freedom of citizens is damaged. Furthermore, it is likely to stop the development of the tech sector in America, as it is mostly built upon the Internet.
Such giants as Google and Amazon will no longer be able to expand its services in the global markets, and will face losses of revenues.
Last month, the US government threated Yahoo to fine the company if it refused to provide users data to the National Security Agency (NSA). When Yahoo was asked to give data in 2007, the company objected calling the request was “unconstitutional and overbroad”. The Internet corporation then filed a suit, but lost the case.
According to Forrester Research, an analysis company, the losses for the tech industry following the case with NSA are predicted to account for $180 billion in the next two years.
The last-year scandal with former NSA analyst Edward Snowden, who revealed the agency collected the Internet and phone data, caused a trust decline not only in the technology products but in the US Government as well.
Governmental control of the Internet is not likely to reduce this year, as Congress has recently refused to pass legislation on the NSA reform bill as it went on 2-month break. The bill’s supporters hope that Congress will pass the bill after the elections in November.
Maidsafe is currently developing a new decentralized information network, which would use SafeCoin digital currency. The project will eliminate the possibility of NSA to gather uses data. It updates itself automatically, with a large number of viewing options and sites available. It enables usesr to learn, do business, make new friends, provide news, video, shop, watch sports, etc. Maidsafe team is willing to bring the new decentralized Internet online by the end of 2014.
