Bitcoin’s ‘Creator’ Craig Wright Still Seeking Bitcoin and Blockchain Patents

The man who claimed to be the creator of bitcoin is currently working on filing a number of patents related to bitcoin and the blockchain technology.

The Australian businessman Craig Wright together with a wealthy Canadian entrepreneur Calvin Ayre filed dozens of patent applications in different sectors, including the virtual currency and blockchain, according to Reuters.

Last year, we reported that Wright filed more than 50 applications relating to the cryptocurrency and its underlying technology.

The latest report from Reuters revealed that Wright and his associates have applied for more than 70 patents and are planning to apply many more. They are allegedly going to file at least 150 applications which can ultimately increase to 400.

“Wright’s expertise combined with Ayre’s support make a potentially formidable force in shaping the future of bitcoin and blockchain, the ledger technology that that underlies digital currencies,” Reuters reported. “The patents range from the storage of medical documents to WiFi security, and reflect Wright’s deep knowledge of how bitcoin and blockchain work.”

Wright first announced that he is a creator of bitcoin in 2015. Last year, he attempted to prove he is Satoshi Nakamoto by digitally signing messages using some of the earliest Bitcoin cryptographic keys. However, after his signatures were dubbed “scam” Wright refused to give more evidence.

It is still unclear whether Wright is Satoshi Nakamoto or not and whether it is just one person or a collective of developers. However, Reuters says that some of the reviewed documents support Wright’s claims that he took part in the creation of digital currency.

But whatever his role in the development of bitcoin, he claimed that the digital currency could achieve widespread adoption. “The Bitcoin blockchain can be scaled up to replace all existing payment system networks to become the world’s single global economic infrastructure,” Wright said in an interview with the BBC last year.

It is also speculated that the blockchain patents will be used to develop casino products, taking into account Ayre’s interest in the gambling industry. According to documents investigated by Reuters, the original bitcoin code might have been developed with gambling in mind. An analysis of an early bitcoin code conducted by a computer coding consultant with no ties to Wright showed that it contains unimplemented functions related to poker.

The patents are being filed via the company called EITC Holdings, which is said to be managed by some of Ayre’s associates and is located in Antigua where he is residing.

Still, none of the patents has been approved and it is unknown whether they would be enforceable if granted.
