Samsung doesn’t share many details until the official presentation at the Samsung Developer Conference next month.
Samsung is preparing a great presentation for the Samsung Developer Conference which will take place in San Francisco next month. The company is getting ready to come up with a new operating system for the Internet of Things.
Although only few details have been unveiled, we can already say that this new operating system will put Samsung on top of the IoT market. It will enable a network of interconnected smart devices in the house working with each other.
Samsung keeps a secret and doesn’t even share the name of future operating system. It is highly unlikely that the company will unveil any major details about the system. So all we can do is to wait until the Samsung Developer Conference which is less than a month away.
“Samsung will announce our new, open-source IoT real-time operating system (RTOS), which has a wide scope of features while maintaining a lightweight and efficient footprint,” the session agenda says.
The giant has already successfully entered the IoT market. Last year Samsung developed an innovative chip technology called Artik. The presentation also took place in San Francisco. The technology was intended to connect all home devices produced by Samsung or using Samsung-made chips to the Internet.
Young Sohn, company president, unveiled three modifications of Artik: Artik 1, Artik 5 and Artik 10, which differ in size and technical parameters. The price ranges from $10 to $100. Mr. Sohn underlined at the presentation that “these smart machines are going to make our lives better”.
Representatives of $211-billion company admit that they see a great potential in IoT. The opinion of such a financial giant seems to be trustworthy – 1 million devices are produced every day under Samsung trademark which makes up around 660 million a year.
Korean manufacturer sets truly challenging targets – they are planning to connect 90% of produced devices to the Internet by 2017. Overall connection will be finished by 2020. According to estimates of Gartner, analyst company, there will be more than 26 billion connected appliances by 2020. Thus just four years separate us from the time when most people will manage to control temperature at home or to get information about necessity to restock products from their refrigerator.
IoT is becoming a convenient lifestyle which allows to devote time to important things rather than concentrating on domestic issues. Yoon Lee, vice president of smart-home and digital appliances at Samsung Electronics, said the very right words: “We want our products to be inside your lifestyle, not outside your lifestyle. That said, we have lots of stuff to connect. What Artik will do is essentially cut off the development process because we can leverage and utilize what’s already being produced”.
