IT giant has introduced new Windows 10 IoT Core upgrade that will bring further improvements, including higher performance of the Raspberry Pi 3 board and application-support.
Microsoft has publicly released the Windows 10 Anniversary Update that is now available for download. The upgrade is for Windows 10 IoT Core, a light version of the operating system created to work on Raspberry Pi 3 as well as other developer boards.
Microsoft started testing the Windows 10 Anniversary Update in December 2015, but has released it for customers just now.
Raspberry is one of the best selling computers in the UK. More than 5 million of Raspberry Pi devices have been sold since its launch in 2012. The Raspberry Pi 3 is the latest version of the Raspberry Pi board introduced in February 2016. The Windows IoT Core has finally added support for the Raspberry Pi 3, five months since its public release.
The new anniversary update will run on DragonBoard 410c and MinnowMax developer boards. Besides, it will work better with Arduino devices and will offer functional parity with Raspberry Pi 2.
According to Microsoft, the improvements include easier installation experience, better performance and applications support. Such feature as Windows IoT Remote Client will allow users to remotely access IoT devices from any desktop or smartphone. Meantime, the IoTivity AllJoyn Device System Bridge will enable Raspberry Pi 3 to connect with other smart devices.
Windows Ink Workspace is one of the main updates in the release. Windows Ink is a part of the Microsoft’s operating system allowing developers to integrate pen support into their apps. It provides an access to Sketchpad, Sticky Notes, and Screen sketch that have been improved as well.
The changes include a new pen button in the notification section, which opens the Windows Ink Workspace. The button is available by default on touch-enabled devices, but the features can also be used on computers without touch-support.
Developers have designed several innovative devices based on Windows 10 IoT Core and Raspberry Pi 3. Microsoft has also mentioned some of the projects on its website, including home automation systems, GPS module, weather stations, temperature controlled fan and facial-recognition triggered door.
The Raspberry Pi will get support for Windows Store’s service apps. With the NOOBS feature, Windows 10 IoT Core on Raspberry Pi 3 will support 8GB cards.
Additional features of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update include multiple foreground app support and better connectivity to the Microsoft Azure IoT hub.
According to release notes, the update brings core OS bug fixes, addresses speech recognition and Bluetooth pairing issues. In addition, it improves stability and security features of the Raspberry Pi 3 board.
