The updated uTorrent version doesn’t have the bitcoin miner, which used the computer power of its customers to mine virtual currency.
uTorrent, one of the most widely used BitTorrent clients today, has released an updated program version, which doesn’t include bitcoin mining software, dubbed Epic Scale.
Last month, the company faced complaints from its clients, who discovered the cryptocurrency mining software that was bundled with the program. The main problem was that the users were unaware that while downloading the previous 3.4.2 version of uTorrent, the installment of the mining software occurred. The miner used the power of clients’ computers to mine the digital currency.
The owner of uTorrent, BitTorrent Inc., denied all accusations, saying the software could not be installed without the users’ approval. As the company explained, during the download process, the clients were presented with a prompt, asking them to accept the software installment. Still, the users didn’t always notice this prompt.
However, the company has seriously taken the negative feedback and permanently suspended Epic Scale Partner Offer. Thereafter, it has made an official apology and said it hopes to gain the confidence of its customers back.
“We acknowledge again that we misjudged how this offer would be received, and we apologize to users who have objected to it or who had trouble uninstalling that software. We understand this has already eroded some users’ trust in μTorrent,” said Jory Berson, vice president of product management at uTorrent.
“This new release is in part to make it easy for our users to identify which version of μTorrent to pursue,” he added.
Although the official website doesn’t offer uTorrent version that includes Epic Scale anymore, the company warns that the other sites may contain the older version with the bitcoin miner offer.
“It is important to note that if you are not downloading μTorrent software directly from us, that some third party distributors may have the older version with the Epic Scale offer. This would only be a very small number, but to be sure you are installing the version you want, look for 3.4.3 or download directly from us,” Berson said.
“We’ve worked hard over the years to meet expectations and deliver quality software. We thank all of those who have remained loyal; we ask you to stay with us as we work hard to prove we can continue to innovate and meet your expectations,” BitTorrent Inc. noted.
The version 7.9.2 of BitTorrent mainline client, which also included the bitcoin miner, was updated to version 7.9.3. The latest release of uTorrent can be downloaded on its official site.
