Ecobee Launches New ecobee3 Lite HomeKit Thermostat

Canadian smart thermostat provider has launched a more affordable version of its ecobee3 thermostat that will still offer most of its main features.

ecobee has unveiled ecobee3 lite smart thermostat, the first new device the company presented in two years. ecobee is the pioneer in the industry as it was the globe’s first company introducing  smart Wi-Fi-enabled thermostat.

Valued at $80 less than its original thermostat, the new product will offer reduced energy consumption, increased control and comfort for its users.

“The new ecobee3 lite delivers the many features of a premium smart thermostat – beautiful design, superior comfort and an intuitive customer experience – but it’s kinder to our customers’ wallets than leading competitors,” said CEO of ecobee, Stuart Lombard, in a press-release. “ecobee3 lite upholds our continued promise to make customers’ lives simpler and better.”

ecobee3 lite smart thermostat features a color touchscreen display which is pretty easy to configure and use. The device integrates with smart home systems, including Apple HomeKit, IFTTT, and Samsung SmartThings. Due to the Amazon Echo compatibility, announced in February this year, the device enables users to control temperature with their voice.

The product is also compatible with most residential heating and colling systems in North America and doesn’t require batteries as it has a cable for hardwiring. According to ecobee, using a smart thermostat can minimize expenditures on annual heating/cooling bills by on average 23%.

“ecobee is committed to driving meaningful cost savings without compromising on quality, and ecobee3 lite is a great example of that innovation at work,” said Vice President of Product at ecobee, Casey McKinnon.

“Ease of use, stunning design, interoperability and category-leading savings were our top priorities while developing ecobee3 lite, and we’re excited for consumers to experience these benefits at a better value than ever before.”

Unlike its flagship thermostat, the lite version doesn’t support ecobee’s room sensors which help users to detect cold or hot places in  their homes. Moreover, the new device lacks smart occupancy detection, and is not compatible with support accessories, such as dehumidifiers, ventilators, and humidifiers.

Ecobee has also launched a new mobile app for Android and iOS platforms that will allow users to control the device with their phones.

ecobee3 lite smart thermostat will be available for purchase in North America starting from October 31, 2016. The device will cost $169 USD in the US and can be purchased at ecobee.com, Amazon.com, BestBuy.com, HomeDepot.com, and Home Depot retail stores. In Canada it will be available at ecobee.com for $219 CAD.

Consumers can visit ecobee.com to ensure the device will work in their home.
