New project, called Sound Wallet, will allow bitcoin users to store private keys on vinyl or CD.
Most of digital currency users prefer to keep their funds in a paper wallet. Still, this method of storing presents certain problems. If someone will see your private key or QR code they will be able to access your address and your funds.
Sound Wallet is a new project enabling cryptocurrency users to store private keys on vinyl by turning it into an encrypted audio file. It will be possible to store keys on CDs, as well as on 7-inch vinyl disks. The project will allow users to store not only bitcoin but any other virtual currency.
The sound file, between 30 and 60 seconds long, will sound simply like a buzzing sound to the human ear. Addittionally, the users can display the sound visually through simple spectroscope application like AndroSpectro. Any high-resolution spectroscope can decipher the code.
Sound Wallet website says that the product offers a huge range of options for storing private keys: “Records are the ultimate archive format. You could add the record to your record crate, put it in a frame and hang it on your wall, or store it in your safe.”
“Where we are at now: We have been able to embed a private key in into audio and then read the private key using a spectroscope app on an android phone. The audio is about 30 seconds to one minute of noise for one key.”
Although Sound Wallet may not be popular among mainstream users, the new offering is likely to appeal to technophiles and audiophiles.
According to Theodore Goodman, the brains behind the project, the project is the safest way to secure cryptocurrencies. He also said the records can outlive CDs, paper wallets and memory cards that degrade over time. Moreover, it was recently found by researchers that CDs from 1990s are already rotting away.
Goodman added: “Records are the ultimate archive format. You could add the record to your record crate, put it in a frame and hang it on your wall, or store it in your safe.”
Recording vinyl is not as simple as burning DVD or CD as it requires such hardware as record lathe, blanks and a turntable.
The project did not receive a crowdfunding target sum of €8,000, still, the wallets are already under production. Sound Wallet now provides two products, a CD wallet and a vinyl wallet, valued at 0.02BTC and 0.09BTC respectively.
