The Discord CEO has taken the decision not to go with Ethereum integration amid strong community backlash. Says their current focus in on protecting users from scams and frauds.

Earlier this week, social media giant Discord sparked the speculation of Ethereum integration into its platform. On Monday, November 8, Discord CEO Jason Citron tweeted an image showing the platform integration with crypto wallets WalletConnect and Metamask.

Earlier this news sparked some excitement, however, not among its community members. There was outrage by discord users citing the environmental concerns associated with Ethereum’s energy usage. This was a bit of a surprise considering Discord hosts some of the biggest crypto communities on its platform.

Besides, there was a huge outcry on Reddit and Twitter with users threatening to boycott the platform. Well, Jason Citron was quick to respond on Thursday, November 11, saying that they have no immediate plans for Etheruem integration. The Discord CEO wrote:

“Thanks for all the perspectives everyone. We have no current plans to ship this internal concept. For now we’re focused on protecting users from spam, scams and fraud. Web3 has lots of good but also lots of problems we need to work through at our scale. More soon”.

Interesting Responses from Discord Community to News on Ethereum Integration

The initial tweet from Citron received a lot of negative responses. One of the responses accused the Discord CEO of encouraging pyramid schemes. A Twitter user who goes by the name Anathaeum noted:

“Man, can’t wait to tell my friends that Discord is encouraging pyramid schemes at grand cost to the environment, and persuading them to cancel their Nitro subscriptions and use competing platforms. Thanks for the heads up!”

This tweet has received 12.5k likes so far. Another user also threatened the Discord CEO by canceling the platform’s Nitro subscription. One of the users, Dead Haven, also asked Citron not to engage in the NFT space and money laundering schemes.

“I kindly request that you to not engage in the NFT scene. I want an app that does not enable a money laundering scheme that is also proven to contribute to climate change. The last thing that I want as a user of your product is to hurt the environment, which I care about deeply,” the user wrote:

Well, it is obvious that the community isn’t quite happy with the idea floated around by Discord CEO. However, it will be interesting to see if Discord consider Etheruem integration in the future after a complete transition to Proof-of-Stake Ethereum 2.0.
