According to the 2023 Expat Insider survey, the ten best destinations for expats this year are Mexico, Spain, Panama, Malaysia, Taiwan, Costa Rica, Philippines, Bahrain, and Portugal.
According to the latest Expat Insider survey by global expat network Internations, Mexico is named the best destination for remote workers to live outside their home country for the second consecutive year. The survey gathered responses from almost 12,000 expats from various nationalities residing in 181 countries. The results were based on factors like quality of life, ease of settling in, personal finance, and other essential aspects of expat life, such as housing and cost of living.
Impressively, 90% of the respondents in Mexico expressed their contentment with their lives in the North American country, surpassing the global average of 72%. The country’s enduring popularity can be attributed to its favorable performance in personal finance and the ease of adjusting to the local culture. Remote workers across the nation say it is easy to adapt to the Mexican lifestyle and embrace the country’s way of living. They also described the locals as the friendliest in the world. Furthermore, the relatively affordable cost of living and pleasant climate contributed to the country’s emergence as a top destination for expats seeking a satisfying lifestyle abroad.
The survey revealed that 71% of expats in Mexico are content with the general cost of living, compared to only 44% globally. This affordability extends to housing, making it easier for remote workers to find suitable and budget-friendly accommodations. The favorable financial situation of 80% of the expats demonstrates the country’s potential to provide residents with a comfortable and financially stable life.
Los Cabos Becomes Top Destination for American Expats
Earlier this year, the Mexican city of Los Cabos ranked as the best destination for Americans going south of the border and looking to settle in the country for remote work. The city’s breathtaking natural beauty, including pristine beaches and marine parks, and a growing wellness scene and high quality of life, has contributed to its popularity.
Despite an uncertain political climate and the looming possibility of a recession, many US citizens opt to relocate south of the border. They are drawn by the allure of year-round warm weather, increased purchasing power, and more affordable and potentially superior healthcare options.
While Mexico excels in several categories in the latest Expat Insider survey, some areas require attention. The survey found that Mexico ranks lower regarding political stability, reflecting the concerns surrounding this aspect. Additionally, approximately 18% of respondents expressed concerns about personal safety, indicating the need for continued efforts to enhance security measures in the country.
Spain Ranks the Second Most Desired Location for Expats
The new survey also recognized other top-ranking countries attracting expats worldwide. Spain secured the second most desirable destination after Mexico, with 87% of expats saying they are happy with their lives in the country. Last year, the European nation ranked as the fifth best location for remote workers. Spain has consistently performed well in terms of quality of life, leisure options, culture, nightlife, and recreational sports. Remote workers in the nation enjoy the country’s pleasant climate, making it easier for them to indulge in various activities and enjoy a high quality of life.
Panama also claimed the third spot on the list. After not being featured in the 2022 survey due to a lack of local respondents, Panama made a remarkable reentry with its best Expat Insider result ever. Like Mexico, the country scored well in the ease of settling in and personal finance categories, making it an attractive destination for expats looking for a smooth transition and a favorable financial environment. Panama also excels in providing quality housing options, ranking fifth worldwide.
