Clips on Fast Laughs can be saved to watch later by adding it to “My List,” a feature that already exists on the Netflix app.
American content platform and media production company, Netflix Inc (NASDAQ: NFLX) has launched a TikTok clone dubbed ‘Fast Laughs,’ a way for people to see something funny while maintaining a presence to watch more videos on the app.
The Fast Laughs feature is not a new app, rather, it is a new feature designed to complement the offerings of the Netflix library. Besides being able to watch short clips directly, users can, react, or share the short clips as well as add the show or movie to a Netflix watchlist.
The Netflix Fast Laughs is a product of months of development and test runs, and the feature is debuting only on iOS for users in selected countries with the Android version to be released in the coming months.
“We’re always looking for new ways to entertain and make discovery easier for members,” Patrick Flemming, director of product innovation at Netflix, said, adding that Fast Laughs is a “new full-screen feed of funny clips from a wide variety of Netflix titles, ranging from films and series to our deep bench of stand-up specials.”
Fast Laughs shares similarities with TikTok, securing a visible placement on the Netflix app. Placed next to the “Coming Soon” feature, Fast Laughs has its own navigation menu and according to media reviews, it indicates how successful the early tests have been.
Netflix Fast Laughs, What Is on Offer?
The Fast Laughs feature “offers a full-screen feed of funny clips from our big comedy catalog including films (Murder Mystery), series (Big Mouth), sitcoms (The Crew), and stand-up from comedians like Kevin Hart and Ali Wong,” the official announcement reads.
User engagement is at the core of the new feature, with the buttons to comment and share placed at the right-hand side of the screen. According to Netflix, watched clips can be shared “ individually on Whatsapp, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter – so your friends can get in on the fun too.”
Clips on Fast Laughs can be saved to watch later by adding it to “My List,” a feature that already exists on the Netflix app. The test-run cycle leading to the official release of this feature had embedded videos with lengths ranging from 15 to 45 seconds, but the version debuted is noted to have no time limit, as reported by TechCrunch.
The content provisions on Fast Laughs may be inappropriate for children, and as such, the clips will not appear under the kids’ section. Additionally, adults may adjust or filter the videos they desire based on their maturity levels.
“We wanted to give members a fun, fast, and intuitive way to discover our catalog by letting these comedic moments across genres speak for themselves in a mobile-native, full screen experience,” said Netflix Product Designer Kim Ho. “We worked hard to cut to just what was necessary in an intentional and minimalist UI design, from the transparent tab bar to ways to react in the moment (‘LOL’) and plan their next laugh by adding to their list.”
With Fast Laughs, Netflix hopes the average time spent on its app will increase, giving related social media platforms a bit of a scare.
