Sony Japan has listed the new wearable motion tracker on its website ahead of its launch in January.

Japanese multinational conglomerate Sony has unveiled Mocopi – a set of wearable motion trackers designed to bring metaverse to smartphones. Users of the new gadgets will find themselves in the metaverse on their phones. There are six pucks comprising the new Mocopi system, and users can wear them around the wrist, ankles, hips, and head.

These pucks will animate avatars inside various metaverse apps on Sony’s Android and Apple’s iPhones. Also, Sony said the Mocopi kit will be priced at 49,000 yen, equaling $360, when it launches in January 2023.

Sony Announces Mocopi

Sony Japan has listed the new wearable motion tracker on its website ahead of its launch in January. The products look like a watch; each sensor weighs around 8g and is about 3.2 cm in diameter. Sony referred to Mocopi as a “motion capture system that can easily perform full body tracking in 2D anywhere by simply attaching 6 small sensors.” The website went further in explaining the features of wearable motion trackers. Users can record their full-body motion using their smartphones and Mocopi. Also, the sensors can be used anywhere, beyond full-body tracking, for both indoor and outdoor activities. To use, it is required to attach the 6 sensors (2 on the wrists, 2 on the ankles, 1 on the head, and 1 on the hip) and read the movements. Sony went further in explaining the ease of using Mocopi.

“A special suit for motion capture is not required. The sensor can be worn with one hand using the included band or clip. It’s completely wireless, so there’s no hassle.”

Notably, Sony specified that the compatible OS for Mocopi is Android 11 or higher and iOS 15.7.1 or higher. And the compatible phone models include Xperia 5IV, Xperia 1IV, Xperia 5 III, Xperia 1III, Xperia 5II, and Xperia 1II. Apple iPhone 12 and above are also supported.

Sony’s Consistent Push into the Metaverse

Also, this is going to be an addition to Sony’s ventures into AR and VR. The company is expanding its presence in the metaverse space, which is growing at speed. Sony and Meta consistently push into the metaverse, especially with their VR headsets in the market. The Japanese company also said it would roll out its PlayStation VR2 headset early next year at $550.

Sony and The Lego Group revealed plans to invest $2 billion in Epic Games as part of their metaverse push. At the time of the announcement earlier this year, both companies said they would commit $1 billion each to accelerate Epic Games quest to “build the metaverse.”
