Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport Lets Travelers Swap Leftover Euros for Cryptocurrency

If departing travelers don’t need euros in their home country, they will be able to exchange them for cryptos at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam.

Have you ever been in a situation when you leave a country but you still have some local currency that won’t be useful for you in your home country? Of course, in such situations you can try to exchange this local money for the currency of your home country, but it is not always possible to do in the country of departure, quite often you need firstly to get your sum in one of the international currencies like dollars and only then you will be able to exchange dollars for the currency you need. So, it can be really a long story.

But Schiphol airport in Amsterdam now will propose travelers another solution.  It will be possible to exchange leftover euros for Bitcoin or Ethereum at a ‘Bitcoin ATM’ installed at the airport. Doesn’t it sound great? Schiphol has become the first airport in Europe to offer service of this kind.

In the official announcement that was published on Wednesday, the airport administration noted that at the moment they are trying to evaluate the existing demand for the two major cryptocurrencies among travelers. Schiphol announced a six-month trial of their unique for Europe initiative.

Tanja Dik, director of Consumer Products & Services at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol said:“Schiphol is constantly looking for ways to innovate and provide optimum service to passengers. With the Bitcoin ATM, we hope to provide a useful service to passengers by allowing them to easily exchange ‘local’ euros for the ‘global’ cryptocurrencies Bitcoin and Ethereum. That can be beneficial if, for instance, it’s not possible to spend euros in their home country.”

For the Bitcoin ATM it was chosen a strategically beneficious location. The ATM is placed near the airport’s departures terminal which gives travelers who leave the country an opportunity to convert euros into the two largest cryptocurrencies by market cap.

It is located in Arrival Hall 2 and is also in the corridor to Departure Halls 1 and 2. And it means that a lot of departing passengers will have a chance to see it and to use its services. The ATM accepts euro bills.

This initiative is a result of partnership established between Schiphol and the software company ByeleX Data Solutions BV that is based in the Netherlands and offers services of crypto ATMs through its subsidiary called ‘Byecoin’ .

According to Herman Vissia, who is a director at ByeleX, the company is excited that Schiphol is willing to join them in exploring ways to introduce passengers to the new cryptoreality”.

The idea of letting travelers use major cryptocurrencies at international airports to eliminate heightened conversion fees during currency conversion is becoming more and more popular among airport operators all over the world.

Earlier this year, Australia’s Brisbane airport has allowed crypto payments at a number of retail establishments at the airport. The terminals where you can pay in cryptos are accessible for departing and arriving travelers.
