Facebook, Groupon and Spotify Can Now Accept Bitcoin as BitPay Teams Up with Adyen

New possibilities in bitcoin acceptance have arisen with the announcement of a partnership between Bitpay and giant payment processor Adyen.

Payments platform Adyen has integrated with bitcoin payment processor BitPay, opening up the possibility for Facebook, Groupon, Ryanair, Spotify  and thousands of other merchants using Adyen to accept bitcoin. Merchants using Ayden’s services will now be able to accept Bitcoin through a single preference check without any further modification of their own site’s back-end.

“It’s such a great partnership,” said Sonny Singh, CCO at BitPay, speaking to IB Times. “Adyen’s focus on e-commerce is perfect for bitcoin. It means firms don’t need to overcome the integration issues with bitcoin as it will now be already included in their existing infrastructure.”

Headquartered in Amsterdam and San Francisco, Adyen counts among its clientele four of the five largest U.S. Internet companies, including Facebook, Airbnb, Spotify, Groupon, and Booking.com. The bitcoin payment option is available to these firms through the Adyen platform, though none have announced their intentions to trigger acceptance of the digital currency.

Jagex, a UK-based game developer, is the first merchant to accept bitcoins with the Adyen payments platform and is the first customer live with Adyen’s integration of BitPay, the Atlanta-based bitcoin payment processor.

“Interest in bitcoin continues to grow among merchants,” said Roelant Prins, CCO at Adyen. “As a business focussed on merchant needs, we are excited to give merchants the ability to securely accept bitcoin payments, alongside over 250 payment methods and 187 transaction currencies that we currently offer.”
