While the exact timing for the Squid Game competition series is yet to be unraveled, Netflix has announced it will be releasing the second season of the movie.

American subscription streaming service and production company, Netflix Inc (NASDAQ: NFLX) is on track to thrill its global audience yet again with a new competition that is modeled after the highly acclaimed Squid Game series. As announced by the company, the competition series, dubbed Squid Game: The Challenge, will be the biggest ever and will feature exactly 456 participants as featured in the original series.

When the Squid Game series was released, its popularity soared remarkably and outpaced other Netflix Originals to become the most-watched show of all time on the streaming app. Netflix confirmed it recorded more than 1.65 billion view hours in the first 28 days after its September 2021 premiere.

The Squid Game series had a lasting effect on those who watched it as the soundtrack from the game was used for various skits as people around the world tried to simulate events from the movie. In the original Squid Game series, exactly 456 contestants passed through hoops in which those who fail to fulfill the conditions of each game were eliminated.

The deadly game was all done to help repay their debts, with only one man designated to cart away with the life-changing prize money set by the almost anonymous organizers. Squid Game: The Challenge will also see only one winner go home with $4.56 million in prize money and while some of the games in the original series will be simulated, Netflix has confirmed there will be other twists that will be introduced.

Though there is no mention of whether this live competition will be as deadly as what was presented in the movie, there is no guarantee it will not be as equally mind-boggling. Recruitment for participants is currently open and among other demands, Netflix is only recruiting English speakers from any part of the world.

Squid Game Competition and Season 2

While the exact timing for the Squid Game competition series is yet to be unraveled, Netflix has announced it will be releasing the second season of the iconic movie, a fact that has also been confirmed by the creator of the series, Hwang Dong-hyuk.

Netflix’s VP of Unscripted and Documentary Series Brandon Riegg appreciated Hwang’s creativity for both the Series and the upcoming reality game show.

“Squid Game took the world by storm with Director Hwang’s captivating story and iconic imagery. We’re grateful for his support as we turn the fictional world into reality in this massive competition and social experiment,” Brandon said. “Fans of the drama series are in for a fascinating and unpredictable journey as our 456 real-world contestants navigate the biggest competition series ever, full of tension and twists, with the biggest ever cash prize at the end.”

According to Netflix, the game competition will be a “co-production between Studio Lambert (The Circle) and The Garden (24 Hours in A&E), part of ITV Studios, and it will be filmed in the UK. Stephen Lambert, Tim Harcourt, and Toni Ireland from Studio Lambert and John Hay, Nicola Hill, and Nicola Brown from The Garden will serve as executive producers.”
