The generative text-to-image capabilities of DALL-E will be integrated into the Shutterstock platform in the coming months.

Leading global creative platform Shutterstock has extended its deal with OpenAI for another six years. The partnership will see Shutterstock provide the AI company with training data for its AI model. The data will come from its vast library of images, videos and music and any associated metadata.

According to Paul Hennessy, CEO of Shutterstock, the partnership underscores the company’s dedication to advancing AI technology innovation. In addition to OpenAI, Shutterstock has also collaborated with NVIDIA, Meta, LG, and several others to develop generative AI tools and standards for creators.

Hennessy noted that the OpenAI partnership will help establish the company as the data and distribution partner of choice for industry leaders in generative AI.

How the Shutterstock-OpenAI Partnership Will Pan Out

Both companies first agreed to have a deal in 2021. According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the data from the creative platform was critical in training its revolutionary DALL-E. With another six years deal, Open AI will enjoy more access to Shutterstock’s library. The AI firm will leverage this to further improve DALL-E’s capabilities.

In return, OpenAI will give Shutterstock priority access to its latest tech. The generative text-to-image capabilities of DALL-E will be integrated into the Shutterstock platform in the coming months. This will allow Shutterstock customers to create images from text. They will also be able to edit existing images into what they want. Shutterstock believes that such integration will fast-track ideation and content production. It also plans to bring generative AI to its mobile users through its recently acquired Giphy.

Market Sentiments Negative

While Shutterstock seems to have opened its arms to generative AI art, many others disagree. Several contributors to stock image galleries have decried the attempts to profit from their work without providing credit or compensation. For example, StabilityAI has been hit with multiple lawsuits for copyright violations.

On its part, Shutterstock has launched a framework to provide additional compensation for its artists and contributors. Artists and contributors will be paid royalties when their intellectual property aids the generation of new assets. The firm also continues to participate in developing policies that prioritize adequate usage rights and proper licenses for all featured content before use.
