The G9 SUV has every potential to outsell even the firm’s most popular product – the P7.

Chinese-based automaker Xpeng Motors has launched its widely-anticipated G9 SUV, featuring some world-class technological advancements and features. The launch was officially announced on Wednesday but the general rollout is slated to begin in October.

Xpeng Tips G9 SUV to Become a Bestseller

According to Brian Gu, Xpeng’s President, the G9 SUV has every potential to outsell even the firm’s most popular product – the P7.

In an interview with CNBC, Gu said in part:

“We think the volume of G9 next year will exceed what we have achieved for P7.”

Notably, the P7 has outdone itself in terms of sales volume since it first launched in May 2020. Shortly after launching, it outsold Xpeng’s G3 SUV which was the bestseller before its launch. The P7 would also go on to rank 10th on the list of all new energy passenger cars – excluding SUVs – that sold in China between January and August 2022. That is according to the China Passenger Car Association.

Interestingly, P7 has sold nearly double the G3s that preceded it. More than 123,000 P7 cars have already been delivered as of the August ending compared to nearly 67,000 G3s. Going by these figures, then the expectations for the G9 SUV will amount to a great feat.

Adds Competitive ADAS Feature

The G9 is coming in as XPeng’s most advanced electric vehicle EV to date. With its ultra-advanced assisted driving system (ADAS) using its Navigation Guided Pilot (NGP), the G9 SUV looks to be positioned enough to compete with Tesla’s FSD.

But other Chinese EV startups such as Nio and Li Auto are also competing. They are also planning to launch their new SUVs this fall. However, Xpeng would be hoping to stand out as that is the only way to ensure sustained growth. Gu acknowledges:

“We need to come up with better and cooler products to resume that growth.”

In line with this, Gu also claims that the new G9 model only needs five minutes of fast charging at an Xpeng station to add 200 kilometers of driving range.

According to Gu, the G9 series should kickstart a cycle of impressive super products. In the meantime, however, Xpeng has revealed plans to launch two additional models in 2023.
