Google’s API for PaLM will help businesses “generate text, images, code, videos, audio, and more from simple natural language prompts”.

Catching up on OpenAI’s accelerating development on ChatGPT, Google has now started offering developers access to one of its most advanced AI-based language models, PaLM. Along with other API enterprise tools, Google is launching an API for PaLM which will help businesses “generate text, images, code, videos, audio, and more from simple natural language prompts”.

Similar to the GPT series created by OpenAI, PaLM is a large language model first announced by Google in April 2022. Similar to other LLMs, PaLM is also a flexible system that can potentially conduct all sorts of text generation and editing tasks. Just like ChatGPT, users can also PaLM to be a conversational Chatbot.

Users can use PaLM for tasks such as writing code or summarizing texts. However, to make it easier for developers to train PaLM to carry out certain specific tasks, Google unveiled a new app dubbed MakerSuite, alongside the PaLM API. In its press release, Google stated:

“With MakerSuite, you’ll be able to iterate on prompts, augment your dataset with synthetic data, and easily tune custom models”.

Google said that this type of fine-tuning to create a consumer-friendly AI system is also possible in a browser. The Google Cloud will handle all the computationally intensive work of training and deployment.

Google Extending Support for Generative AI

Tech giant Google is already gearing up for expanding its footprint in the rapidly evolving AI market. Along with launching the PaLM API, Google also expanded the support for generative AI in its Vertex AI platform. This will specifically help businesses train and deploy machine learning models.

Also, Vertex is likely to have access to more models built by Google Research as well as the company’s AI subsidiary DeepMind. In the future, they will also be able to tap into open-source and third-party systems.

Besides, Google is also launching a new platform dubbed Generative AI app builder. As per Google, this platform “allows developers to quickly ship new experiences including bots, chat interfaces, custom search engines, digital assistants, and more. Developers have API access to Google’s foundation models and can use out-of-the-box templates to jumpstart the creation of gen apps in minutes or hours.”

With OpenAI and other platforms rising pretty fast, Google is also making a push to build more AI tools.
