Getting Blockchain in Gear

The roar of a classic’s engine isn’t usually associated with blockchain, but award-winning Swiss startup Proxeus aims to change that. This weekend they celebrated their successful partnership with Swiss auto investment specialist Mercuria Helvetica in developing the platform to register the certifications of authenticity and condition of their collection on Ethereum – and they did it with style.

At the Mercuria Helvetica storage facility in Pleidelsheim, Germany, Proxeus cofounder Antoine Verdon and Mercuria Helvetica CEO Fernando Verboonen took a select group of behind the curtain of classic car investment.

Following the realtime issuing of the first certificate, Verdon and Verbooren invited the attendees to get behind the wheel and experience the other side of the industry – driving an  investment-grade classic.

This partnership was spurred by a deep need for trustworthy assurances of authenticity and condition – two of the key determinants of value – when investing in a classic auto. Certification of the authenticity, integrity and history of collector’s items like classic cars usually relies on antique or incomplete original documentation of provenance, maintenance, and ownership on one hand, and expert opinions and certificates on the other.

Due to their direct impact on the value, these documents have a high risk of being forged or misassigned, a risk increased by the lack of document standardization for classic cars.
“When Fernando approached us with this proposal we were on board immediately,” said Verdon. “We’ve talked about the tokenization of collectibles since before the white paper – it’s a great use case.In this case it’s not just the technology that’s engaging – this is progress we can hear and feel!” Driving a paradigm shift Leveraging the Proxeus solution, these risks can be mitigated – first, a suitable authority, such as Mercuria Helvetica, documents and certifies the car using a smooth and flexible workflow that registers this certification on the blockchain, making it both unforgeable and verifiable by anyone.

For a next step further, the car itself could be taken to the blockchain as a non-fungible token with integrated certification library, offering not only proof of ownership and history but also a permanent link to the verified documentation.

“We spend a lot of time and energy on documentation,” Verboonen said. “Proxeus removed a lot of effort and added a lot of security, and they did it for us very, very quickly. It’s going to be an impressive tool and one we’ll be happy to use.”

With benefits beyond the efficiencies of automation, this security in documentation benefits all stakeholders – the assessors’ can more easily verify and create documentation and reduce their  reputational risk, the collectors, investors, and custodians all benefit from reduced transaction  costs and risk of fraud.
