The world’s leading packaging and labeling services company has signed an IoT deal that is expected to take the clothing sector to the whole new level.
Avery Dennison Retail Branding and Information Solutions (RBIS), the global apparel and footwear branding, labeling and RFID solutions provider, has announced a partnership with EVRYTHNG, the Internet of Things software firm.
Under the deal, the globe’s biggest fashion brands will be able to develop unique digital identities and data profiles in the cloud for a minimum of 10 billion clothing items within the next three years. The two companies believe that this is the biggest agreement for the IoT-enabled products ever.
“Avery Dennison is offering powerful new value to customers through our partnership with EVRYTHNG,” said president and chief operating officer of Avery Dennison, Mitch Butier. “We can make apparel and footwear products smarter and enable them to participate in digital applications and services, helping to drive new consumer experiences, protect brands’ value, and provide supply chains with real-time analytics.”
“The fact that at least 10 billion Avery Dennison RBIS products will be digitized at the point of manufacture is both a milestone in making the Internet of Things mainstream and a huge enabler for the apparel and footwear industry in particular,” said Niall Murphy, the CEO and co-Founder at EVRYTHNG.
“EVRYTHNG and Avery Dennison RBIS are enabling products for these brands to be ‘born digital’ and create new value with IoT applications, which is a huge opportunity for the industry as a whole,” he added.
The development of digital technologies is changing the way companies engage with their clients. To interact with brands, people prefer to use their smartphones, whose role is no longer limited to just making calls.
Avery Dennison will enable customers to digitize their products via EVRYTHNG’s Janela™ Smart Products Platform, thus developing use cases before the sale of items. The system will help companies to become more interactive and deliver personalized content for each customer and clothing product. Besides, it will deliver useful data analytics for fashion brands, providing an increased brand protection and ensuring supply chains efficiency.
The users of the platform will be able to verify the production history of the acquired items, use loyalty programs, select if their size is available and make product re-orders.
The deal will bring together EVRYTHNG’s IoT software technology for data control and Avery Dennison’s expertise in the apparel sector together with their hardware manufacturing. This will make brands more interactive and will deliver personalized content for each customer and clothing product.
The rate of IoT industry growth hit an unprecedented level over the last years. We are getting closer to the reality where we no longer need wearable technology, as our bodies are the integrated parts of the IoT. In Sweden, for instance, some workers are embedded with a chip allowing them to open doors and use photocopier machines. Meantime, microchips are used in Mexico to monitor personnel’s access to the country´s criminal investigation center.
