OpenAI CTO.
Mira Murati, an accomplished Albanian business manager, held the pivotal role of Chief Technology Officer at OpenAI from 2018, contributing significantly to the development of breakthrough technologies such as ChatGPT, Dall-E, and Codex. Her leadership extended beyond technological innovation, encompassing the oversight of OpenAI’s research, product, and safety teams.
Born on December 16, 1988, in the picturesque city of Vlorë, Albania, Murati embarked on an international educational journey. At the age of 16, she attended the Pearson United World College of the Pacific on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, graduating in 2005. Murati pursued her undergraduate education at both Colby College and Dartmouth College.
Before her tenure at OpenAI, Murati accumulated valuable experience at renowned companies, including an impactful stint at the electric car giant, Tesla, and a venture into the realm of augmented reality with the startup Leap Motion.
In a surprising turn of events on November 17, 2023, Murati assumed the role of interim Chief Executive Officer at OpenAI following the abrupt departure of Sam Altman. During her brief leadership, she skillfully navigated the responsibilities of the position. However, the dynamic landscape of executive leadership saw her succeeded by Emmett Shear just two days later, marking a swift yet impactful chapter in OpenAI’s journey.
