Crypto Proponent Eric Adams Wins NY Mayor Race

Miami, Florida is typically the city recognized as the leading crypto hub in the United States, however, this status is about to be contested with the victory of Eric Adams as the incoming Mayor of New York City. Adams, a former Police Captain in the city, won the election against Republican Curtis Sliwa by 66% to 29% after more than half of the projected votes had been counted.

In a speech to his supporters on Tuesday, Adams reiterated that he is one of the homegrown politicians in the city, relishing his journey to the city’s top seat.

“Tonight, New York has chosen one of you – one of our own. I am you. I am you,” Adams told his supporters at the victory party in Brooklyn on Tuesday after initial results showed he beat Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, as reported by the Associated Press. “After years of praying and hoping and struggling and working, we are headed to City Hall.”

Adams will serve as the second black Mayor of New York after David Dinkins, who led the city from 1990 to 1993. Adams, 61 led a successful career as a police officer where he advocated for the rights of black officers and spoke against racial injustice. He will be taking over from Bill De Blasio in January, as the city looks to heal from the pangs of the coronavirus pandemic amidst many other reforms.

Eric Adams and his Plans for Turning New York into a Crypto Hub

Beyond his primary inclination to crime-fighting, Eric Adams has bigger ambitions for the city which he reiterated many times during his campaign. This ambition focuses on turning New York into a Bitcoin crypto hub, as well as in retaking the lead in relation to technological innovations.

“I’m going to promise you in one year, you’re going to see a different city. We’re going to bring businesses here. We’re going to become the center of life science, the center of cybersecurity, the center of self-driving cars and drones, the center of bitcoins, the center of all the technology,” he said.

Eric Adams has been very vocal about his ambitions, and once told Miami Mayor, Francis Suarez, who also won his mayoral election, that Miami has had its run noting it’s time for New York City to bring its businesses back.

Suarez remains a model for other city’s mayors as he is taking his role as a crypto proponent to a new level with a radical decision to take 100% of his next salary in BTC. Engrafting Bitcoin and altcoins into the hearts of public office holders have been cited as one of the key ways in which the digital currency ecosystem will be ushered into the next phase of its mainstream adoption cycle.

The rationale is that citizens yearning to legalize or recognize Bitcoin can be better fast-tracked if elected officeholders are positively skewed toward the financial innovation.
