The leader of the industry is planning on the significant development of the IoT and has all the chances to cause the explosive growth of the sphere: generous investment combined with solid experience seems to be promising.

Microsoft is a company which needs no introduction. The tech giant has been proving that it knows how to make business since 1975. On the 4th of April the company announced its new focus: during the next four years it will invest $5 billion in the Internet of Things. The investments will be spent on conducting researches, developing the IoT projects and creating opportunities for partnership.

The news is groundbreaking as to date the company has spent only $1.5 billion on the development of IoT according to its executive vice president Jason Zander. Microsoft has already developed a number of notable projects in the sphere: at the moment it offers seven different products in the sphere including Windows 10 IoT and Azure IoT Suite.

The $5 billion investment seems to be a sustainable solution. The sphere of IoT actively boosts the development of the cloud computing. Microsoft has already created a product which perfectly suits the needs of the IoT like Microsoft Azure. Such qualities of this platform like its elastic capacity, high uptime, and geographic distribution make it a perfect start for massive IoT invasion.

The global trend for the cloud computing development has been outlined in Forrester’s Predictions 2018. According to this document, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google and Microsoft will capture 76% of all cloud platform revenue in 2018, expanding to 80% by 2020. It also predicts great future for one of the key IoT Microsoft’s products saying that “Microsoft Azure Stack sparks a jump in private and hybrid cloud spending globally in 2018.”

Microsoft’s IoT platform has already attracted a number of outstanding projects. The company is interested in six industries: Healthcare, Manufacturing, Natural Resources, Retail, Smart City and Transportation. A prime example of the abilities of the Microsoft’s IoT platform is the TechSpan Engineering’s solution for monitoring drinking water quality online originated in India. The system built on the Azure IoT platform will soon include over 1700 stations and deals with one of the most important issues in the country. Microsoft offers a variety of technologies supplementing the IoT to maximize the abilities of the platform.

The leaders of the industry set the direction of growth for the whole sphere. Microsoft has always been setting the standards in the IT industry. It is an undeniable fact that this tech giant has the support of billions of users and partnership with hundreds of the most progressive startups and project. All in all, the influence of the Microsoft on the industry is incredible.

The Internet of Things is still a relatively young sphere. Lots of things have been already done, but we are not even close to using the whole potential of this set of technologies. Probably, the massive investment of Microsoft will cause the overall boost in this sphere – and change the whole world in the upcoming four years.
