According to Musk, the Tesla Optimus robot would be an “extremely capable robot.”

Last week, Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled a prototype of the company’s Optimus robot during the AI Day 2022 event. It is such a big shift for the EV maker- from a person in a robot suit last year to an actual robot this year. The businessman said he wants to see some expectations regarding the Optimus robot while speaking to the attendees. He also acknowledged that Tesla has “come a long way”, especially with the Optimus robot. He added, “…compared to that, it’s going to be very impressive.”

The Tesla team presented a more streamlined current robot which Musk called Optimus. However, Musk had to be moved to the stage where it did a slow wave to the crowd. The billionaire assured everyone that the robot would be able to walk in a few weeks. Here is what the Tesla CEO said about the Optimus robot:

“There’s still a lot of work to be done to refine Optimus and prove it. I think Optimus is going to be incredible in five or 10 years, like mind blowing.”

Furthermore, the CEO presented a test robot to the audience. According to the company, it was developed in February. The robot walked out to the stage and waved to the audience, after which the automaker shared a video of it doing more tasks. The clip shows the machine lifting a box, a watering can to water plants, and a metal bar at Tesla’s California plant.

He explained that it would be able to move all its fingers independently and move. Basically, Tesla is designing the Optimus robot to be able to use its two hands and work in the factory. Musk said the goal is to make a useful humanoid robot as soon as possible. More interestingly, the company used the same “discipline” it uses in designing its car for the robot.

Speaking further, he mentioned that existing humanoid robots lack brains and are unable to solve problems by themselves. However, according to Musk, the Tesla Optimus robot would be an “extremely capable robot.” The company is also planning to produce it in millions. It is safe to say Musk wants the machine to solve the problem that comes with other humanoid robots. He talked about the lack of intelligence to navigate the world by themselves and their high costs, usually produced in low quantities. The businessman told the audience that Tesla would be offering the Optimus robot at an expected price of “probably less than $20,000.”He calls on talents across the world to join Tesla and make the robot vision a reality.

In the after-hours session, Tesla stock is trading up 0.31% to $266.06. Except for growing 2.655 over the past year and 16.71% in the last three months, the company has been recording declines.
