This year’s awards are special for the digital currency community as Bitpay and their recently Bitcoin Checkout app is nominated for the ‘Best Retail App of the Year’ by Contactless & Mobile Awards.

Since 2011 Contactless & Mobile Awards has significantly grown to be a celebration of innovation which covers a great number of categories. This year’s awards are special for the digital currency community as Bitpay and their recently Bitcoin Checkout is nominated for Best Retail App of the year.

The company confirmed the news on its blog: “With that said, we’re incredibly keen to go the extra mile and win the retail award outright. We want to show the world that this combination of NFC and bitcoin technology really is the most secure, frictionless solution out there. Bitcoin Checkout makes it possible for bitcoin payments to be integrated and used by countless retailers looking to benefit from an extra revenue stream free from the risk of chargebacks and fraud.”

Bitcoin Checkout was released back in November, and that mades the nomination particularly remarkable. It is both flexible and functional in its approach to transforming tablets and smartphones into mobile point-of-sale systems.

“Bitcoin Checkout makes it possible for Bitcoin payments to be integrated and used by countless retailers looking to benefit from an extra revenue stream free from the risk of chargebacks and fraud,” explains Wouter Vonk, European Marketing Manager for Bitpay.

“We’ve had great feedback from our customers using Bitcoin Checkout,” he adds. “To be nominated for this award alongside some tough competition really is a reflection of where we’re taking Bitcoin both this year and in the not-so-distant future.”

The most outstanding feature of Bitcoin Checkout is the ability to pay using Near Field Communication, the technology that enables modern devices to establish radio communication with each other by touching them together or bringing them into close proximity.

“We want to show the world that this combination of NFC and Bitcoin technology really is the most secure, frictionless solution out there,” says Vonk.

The app is described by its producer as “flexible” and includes “additional features designed for service businesses, including multi-employee checkout, optional on-screen tipping, simple tip reporting, and matching of order IDs entered from another point-of-sale system.”

The Contactless & Mobile Awards are presented to those companies, organizations and retailers who have done the most to embrace and implement contactless/NFC technology into their day-to-day operating practices.

The awards include many categories such as Contactless Payment Collaboration, Transportation and Ticketing, Innovation, Customer Experience, Loyalty and many more.

Retail category is “rewarding retailers that embrace technology to improve the customer experience,” say the awards’ organizers. “From digital signage to virtual storefronts to smart mobile payment systems; in the retail category, the judges are looking for forward looking, integrated solutions that take shopping to the next level.”

This year apart from Bitcoin’s app for Best Retailer App of the year were also nominated McDonald’s Piper iBeacon campaign of Piper, Dot Origin’s The DTAG100 Varibeacon and Sunoco’s Secure PumpPAY w/VNET.
