Google is bringing together some of its payment services under a new brand called Google Pay. The service will simplify online payments and accelerate access to users’ payment information.
Google announced on Monday that it’s uniting all of its different payment tools under a new service, simply called Google Pay. This service is expected to be available online, in store (NFC payments), and across several Google Products.
Pali Bhat, Vice President of Product Management for Payments, in a Google blog post said: “With Google Pay, it’ll be easier for you to use the payment information saved to your Google Account, so you can speed through checkout with peace of mind.
Over the coming weeks, you’ll see Google Pay online, in store, and across Google products, as well as when you’re paying friends.” He described this uniting as more of a rebranding than a change to the underlying products or technology.
According to Pali Bhat, Google Pay is expected to bring together such products as Android Pay (Google’s mobile payments and loyalty platform) and Google Wallet (its peer-to-peer payments app).
Android Pay was introduced three years ago and until now was meant for users making online, in-app, and retail purchases using their Android device, while Google Wallet was for friends and family with a U.S. debit card sending money via their Android and iOS device.
Other Google products and services also had their own payment options and features and were powered by Google Payments, the company’s backend payments platform that supports all of its payments-related products.
Google Pay will store your payment information in your Google account, and you can easily use it to send money to friends, to pay for items online, for shopping using NFC in-store, as well as in Chrome, YouTube, Google Play, and other Google products.
This makes buying and paying through Google less complicated, as you don’t have to worry which app to use to access your payment information, because it is all saved under the service. Google Pay has already been rolled out to Airbnb, Dice, Fandango, HungryHouse, Instacart, and other apps and websites.
Mark Young, Fandango’s senior vice president of global strategy & business development, commented: “Google Pay provides a simple, intuitive option for Fandango customers to speed through checkout with just one tap.” He added: “We look forward to working with Google as they grow this exciting new payment platform.”
Pali Bhat mentioned that “bringing everything into one brand is just the first step for Google Pay.” To promote the new service, Google is also offering special discounts. You may get them when buying something via Google Pay from B&H, Fandango and Instacart.
Google Pay is expected to be launched over the coming weeks on apps, online retailers, and in-store payment processing terminals.
