According to Elon Musk, Tesla’s new V3 Solar Roof will cost less than a standard roof plus solar panels.

On Friday, an American automotive and energy giant Tesla announced it had rolled out a new version of its solar roof tile for use at residential homes, V3 Solar Roof. According to Elon Musk, installations will begin in the upcoming weeks, with 1,000 new roofs expected to be produced per week.

Tesla first came up with their Solar Roof Tiles in 2017, and the volume production was set to start in 2018. However, the process turned out to be quite slow, and the production was delayed until this year. By now, two versions of the solar roof tiles have been already tested, some improvements and developments have been made, and finally, the company seems to be ready for the launch of mass production.

Tesla’s Solar Roof Tiles will look like ordinary roof tiles when installed. However, they will have some features that make them absolutely different. Solar Roof combines solar and non-solar tiles that appear similar to create a beautiful aesthetic. Made with tempered glass, Solar Roof tiles are at least three times stronger than standard roofing tiles. It performs better and provides more energy generation than an average roof of the same size. Besides, owners of V3 Solar Roofs will be able to control their solar system and home energy consumption anytime from any place with their Tesla app and monitor their consumption rise and fall in real-time.

When purchasing Tesla’s V3 Solar Roof, a customer will receive a tile warranty for 25 years, including power and protective weatherization guarantees.

As for the price, Tesla promises that its product will cost less than a standard roof plus solar panels.

Previously, Elon Musk stated:

“I am very excited about version 3 of solar roof. We have a shot at being equal to a comp shingle roof plus someone’s utility cost or being lower than that. That’s one of the cheapest roofs available. So you can have a great roof with better economics than a normal fairly cheap roof and your utility bill.”

“The solar glass roof is not going to make financial sense for somebody who has a relatively new roof, because this is itself a roof, that has integrated solar power generation,” added he.

The V3 Solar Roof’s website provides prices: the total price for the average 2,000 square-foot home makes up $42,500 and includes 10kW solar panels. There is also a price of $33,950 left after an $8,550 federal tax incentive.

To install Tesla’s solar roofs, experienced specialists should be hired. As Elon Musk said, he is also planning to ultimately expand installations to any third-party contractors.

According to him,  the company is currently working on cutting down the installation time and strive to install the solar glass tiles even faster than comparative shingles:

“We’re doing installations as fast as we possibly can, starting in the next few weeks.”

Elon Musk is planning to embrace the market of 100 million houses globally. Initially, only one look for the Solar Roof will be available, with more options rolled out later, including tiles that resemble clay and other alternatives.
