Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence (AI) startup xAI has released “Grok” – an AI chatbot that can reportedly outperform ChatGPT-3.5 in several academic tests. In a November 5 post on social media platform X, Musk and XAI revealed that the purpose of the AI tool is to “assist humanity in its quest for understanding and knowledge.”

According to a release from xAI, Grok has a unique and key advantage over other AI tools in that it has access to real-time knowledge of the world through Musk’s X platform. The chatbot can also answer “spicy questions” that are rejected by other AI tools and is “designed to answer questions with a bit of wit and has a rebellious streak.”
Here is the chatbot’s response to a request for a step-by-step cocaine recipe:

Grok – the AI Chatbot to Rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT?
Grok is powered by the Grok-1 large language model (LLM) which was developed over the past four months. The model was evaluated by several academic tests – including mathematics and coding – designed to measure its math and reasoning abilities. It outperformed all models in its compute class, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT-3.5. It, however, fell short of ChatGPT-4 across all tests.
“It is only surpassed by models that were trained with a significantly larger amount of training data and compute resources like GPT-4. This showcases the rapid progress we are making at xAI in training LLMs with exceptional efficiency,” the startup wrote.
The chatbot currently does not have audio and visual capabilities. xAI stated that these will be added soon to enable broader applications such as real-time interactions and assistance.
Safety Measures and Availability
Grok is still a “very early beta product” and will initially be made available to a select number of users in the United States. The startup will incorporate user feedback before a wider launch and is set to be “rolling out new capabilities and features in the coming months.” The service will be available on X’s Premium Plus tier for $16 per month.
The xAI team also acknowledged the potential for misuse of the technology and stated that it would be adding more guardrails over time to prevent this:
“We believe that AI holds immense potential for contributing significant scientific and economic value to society, so we will work towards developing reliable safeguards against catastrophic forms of malicious use. We believe in doing our utmost to ensure that AI remains a force for good.”
